Eight

The sound of muffled whispering and giggling reached Kelly's ears, and she looked up from her book. At the front of the room, Ms. Dalton lifted a finger to her lips while she stared at a pair of girls in the back of the study hall. Sneaking a quick glance at Kirk across the aisle, Kelly ducked her head into Tess of the d'Urbervilles again.

It was Thursday, and she and Kirk had been sitting together in study hall all week—since they'd discovered they were in the same study hall. But Kelly had figured out pretty quickly that she couldn't get much studying done with Kirk sitting right next to her. She was much too aware of his presence to concentrate on her work.

She smiled as she peeked at him again through her lashes. Nonchalant and aloof, he sat back in his chair, his long legs stretched out under his desk and his chemistry notes propped up in front of him on a stack of books. A shock of hair had fallen forward across his forehead, and a preoccupied frown gave his profile a stern, almost fierce look.

As though feeling her steady gaze, he looked up at her, a smile lifting the side of his mouth. She blushed and lowered her eyes.

Please don't let it be true about him, she prayed silently, frowning at her open book. I like him too much already. All week she had been hearing wisps of rumor floating around—a word here, a broken sentence there. Some of the girls she overheard were positive that he was dating Marci Kaplan again. Kelly kept denying it to herself, but she felt a little nagging doubt. She had finally called Nicholas and broken her date with him—all for Kirk. She had to be sure she had done the right thing.

With a brief look up the aisle toward Ms. Dalton, Kelly pulled a slip of paper out of her notebook and scribbled on it hastily: "Are you sure you and Marci are just friends?"

Folding it into a thick square, she tossed it onto Kirk's desk. He looked up in surprise and grinned while he opened it up. His eyes narrowed as he read it.

"Of course we are," he hissed, scowling at her. "I told you that."

"Kirk—quiet, please," Ms. Dalton called out softly.

He directed his scowl toward the front of the room and then grabbed a pen. With a dashing scrawl he wrote on the paper and handed it back to Kelly. "There's nothing going on, so stop worrying about it," his message read.

Kelly's cheeks warmed again. She didn't want to keep prodding, but she couldn't help it. She had to know for sure. Picking up her pencil again, she wrote: "People are saying you two are going out. Why would anybody say it if it isn't true?"

Sighing impatiently, Kirk took the note from her and read it while she looked at him with hopeful eyes.

"I don't know why," he retorted in a low, irritated voice. "You shouldn't listen to rumors."

"Kirk? No talking, please.
